The History Behind the Eric of Pomerania Belt

The Eric of Pomerania belt takes its name from Eric of Pomerania (1381/1382–1459), Duke of Pomerania from the House of Griffins, who later became King of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden and the first monarch of the Kalmar Union. One of the best-preserved ceremonial belts of the Late Middle Ages is traditionally associated with Eric of Pomerania and has become the inspiration for one of the most recognizable belt designs in historical reenactment.

Its distinctive buckle and brass mounts have made the Eric of Pomerania belt a favorite among reenactors portraying the 14th and 15th centuries. The elegant proportions and historically inspired decoration make it equally suitable for civilian and military medieval costumes.

Born in Darłowo (Rügenwalde) under the name Bogislaw, Eric belonged to the Griffin dynasty of Pomerania. Through the patronage of Queen Margaret I, he was adopted as her heir and ascended the thrones of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, uniting the Scandinavian kingdoms under the Kalmar Union. His reign marked an important chapter in Northern European history, and the ceremonial belt associated with him remains one of the finest surviving examples of late medieval leather craftsmanship.
